News: RM6bil West Coast Expressway to Boost Values of Teluk Intan

Dec 5, 2017

Teluk Intan in Perak is expected to further cement its position as a bustling tourist hotspot upon completion of the RM6 billion West Coast Expressway by 2019, according to the town’s MP Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong.

The new road connecting Banting and Taiping will help entice more visitors to Teluk Intan, which is famous not only for its delicacies but also for its leaning clock tower.

“The expressway will make Teluk Intan more accessible and more connected with major cities like Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang. As such, we will be able to attract more tourists, especially excursionists and those seeking to try out local food.”

In fact, the journey time from the town to Penang in the north and Kuala Lumpur in the south is expected to be shortened by at least 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

Coupled with other major projects like the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris campus, Teluk Intan is anticipated to become a more attractive destination, said Mah, who is also the Minister for Plantation Industries and Commodities.

“This will indirectly create more jobs and business opportunities for locals in the region. Apart from that, by having better infrastructure and logistics, Teluk Intan will also be more favourable for businesses and investments, local and foreign.”

As a matter of fact, Mah noted that the town and the adjacent district of Bagan Datuk have witnessed strong socio-economic growth over the past few years.

Previously, Infrastructure, Energy and Water Committee Chairman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin stated last April that the West Coast Expressway will generate more jobs and enhance the living standards of people living within its vicinity.

Last week, he announced during the Perak State Assembly that the local authorities have come up with several downstream projects to provide employment to youths, including those living in Teluk Intan.

In particular, they could be hired as skilled or semi-skilled workers in building and maintaining the new road, or they could be involved in other construction projects. They may even try running businesses in key areas along the West Coast Expressway.
