News: Mobike to a Pollution Free Country

Sep 12, 2017

SP Setia’s townships in Malaysia are set to feature a dockless bicycle-sharing system created by China-based Mobike.

Initially, several hundred high-tech bikes will be installed at strategic locations in Setia Alam and Setia Eco Park in Shah Alam. But the company intends to expand to central Kuala Lumpur and other parts of the country later this year.

“We see that Malaysia is embarking on an exciting and ambitious path to achieve an efficient, integrated, and sustainable public transport system,” said Chris Martin, Mobike’s Vice President for international expansion.

“We envision that the convenient bike-sharing service will grow in tandem with the nation’s push to redefine the transportation sector’s environmental impact for a sustainable and well-connected country,” he said during the launch of Mobike in Setia Alam.

Malaysia has become Mobike’s third market in Southeast Asia after it commenced its operations in Thailand last month. It is also continuing to grow its presence in Singapore following its debut there in March.

Overall, the bike-sharing company operates in 170 cities across the globe. In particular, it has 1,000 bicycle in Manchester, 4,000 in Florence and 8,000 units in Milan.

Each bike comes with smart-lock technology and built-in global positioning system (GPS). These enables the firm to monitor the exact location and movements of each unit, as well as ascertain their status and the demand for each route in real-time.

“Big data collected and analysed by Mobike’s “Magic Cube” AI platform can help city planners and managers leverage a wealth of insight for smarter, more optimised operations and infrastructure. This is a vital feature for cities, which no other bike-sharing company provides,” noted Martin.

To use these bicycles, users need to install the Mobike app from Google Play or the App Store and register. They also need to pay a fully refundable deposit of RM99 (S$31.60), but there is presently a discounted rate RM9 for the deposit and clients may also avail of the free one-month service for September.
