News: MPKJ Fines Developer for Illegal Drainage That Caused Floods

Feb 8, 2018

The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKJ) has imposed an undisclosed fine to a developer with an ongoing project at Sungai Long in Cheras for causing floods in the area.

This is because the authorities, including MPKJ President Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, found out that the company was unlawfully channelling water into Jalan SF16’s main drain through a hidden drainage. Hence, they ordered the developer fill up the underground drain it built for this purpose.

In fact, the illegal act caused the retention ponds in Jalan SF16 near Admiral Park and Capa Residency to overflow two times in just one week.

On 23 January, one of the retention ponds overflowed and toppled a portion of the perimeter wall in Jalan SL16/4 at the rear of Capa Residency. The developer is now rebuilding it after residents complained. Subsequently, the water in the retention pond gushed out again on 31 January due to heavy rain.

“The retention pond has been overflowing only since one of the developers began channelling water from its construction site to a main drain in our area,” said Admiral Park and Capa Residency Residents Association President Yap Wing Teck.

In addition, the second retention pond in Jalan SL15 close to Admiral Residency overflowed twice, inundating the main road along Sungai Long Golf Club.

He also revealed that another developer is current deepening and widening a section of the drain in Jalan SF16 so that it can divert water from its construction site.

“We fear that worse things could happen after the two incidents,” noted Yap.

Thankfully, the residents reported both issues to the authorities. This led to MPKJ fining the first developer, while the second issue is presently under investigation, said the municipal council’s President Mohd Sayuthi Bakar.
