News: Penang Hill Undergoing Rehabilitation Works to Stop Further Landslides

Mar 13, 2018

Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has started repairing the damaged slopes along the 5.1km rough road winding from the Penang Botanic Gardens to the apex of Penang Hill, reported The Star.

“Stabilisation works on the slopes will take between six months and a year to be completed, depending on the size. It is tedious work as the whole project needs to undergo several processes,” said PHC General Manager L.L. Cheok.

As such, they have temporarily installed tarpaulin sheets on the barren slopes to prevent further occurrences of erosion during heavy downpour before the works are completed.

Rehabilitating the slopes is important as Penang Hill is not only a world-famous tourist attraction, but is also a protected forest reserve, he explained, adding that they surveyed the entire area before carrying out the works.

“We did soil investigation and sought geotechnical consultation before a contractor was appointed via open tender to carry out stabilisation works,” he said.

The last phase in repairing the hillslopes is the rehabilitation works, but this is expected to take years, as the authorities intend to use the most natural way of mending the slopes.

Previously, Penang Hill suffered 194 landslides at different areas due to heavy rain last November. As a result, the funicular train service there could not operate for two months.

“We are done with the emergency recovery works which made it possible for the funicular railway service to resume. Now, we are looking into long-term and permanent solutions with emphasis on restoration, rebuilding and rehabilitation,” noted Cheok.

At present, PHC and the state of Penang’s Public Works Department are rehabilitating 32 spots along the 5.1km rough road where landslides occurred. Despite the construction work, the road remains open to the public.
