News: ECRL Workers to Be Dominated By Locals, says MRL

Apr 10, 2018

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has assured the workers at the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) project will be dominated by locals, with foreign workers accounting for only 30 percent, reported The Edge.

In fact, of the 1,718 people hired for the construction of the RM60 billion project, only 311 or 18 percent were from China, it said in a statement.

More than 2,000 local applicants were also interviewed in March during a four series of open interviews done in the Klang Valley, Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu.

MRL’s comment follows reports quoting Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying that ECRL’s developer had filed an application to hire Chinese nationals due to ‘language accessibility’.

MRL added that China Communications Construction Co Ltd (CCCC), the rail project’s main contractor, is spending RM23 million on a training programme dubbed East Coast Rail Line Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI-ECRL) as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme.

Notably, PLKI-ECRL is a joint venture between CCCC, Universiti Malaysia Pahang and MRL to train and hire Malaysians who had successfully completed the training.

“The programme, which began in September 2017, saw 185 trainees complete their training in January and February and has held various positions at MRL and CCCC. A total of 244 trainees are currently undergoing this training programme and will complete training by the end of April,” revealed MRL.

“Of the total 2,000 in March, 115 applicants have been selected to participate in the PLKI-ECRL, while other successful applicants will be offered employment by CCCC or ECRL subcontractors.”

MRL expects the construction period of the ECRL to generate a total of 80,000 indirect and direct employment opportunities.
