News: SPARK:Using Recyclable Materials For a Good Cause

May 10, 2018

SPARK has completed 2 doghouses for the Outdoor Arts Foundation a non-profit, community-based arts organisation.

The dog houses were on exhibited at London’s St Pancras and Stratford Stations before they were auctioned at the end of April 2018 in support of the work of BowWow Haus London a collaboration between the Blue Cross animal charity, American not-for-profit organisation Outdoor Arts Foundation and photographer Drew Gardner.

SPARK contributed 2 doghouses from designs selected by internal competition across our 3 studios Shanghai, Singapore and London.

The design and fabrication processes of the 2 doghouses were motivated by a number of SPARK’s interrelated interests. First was the desire to illustrate a positive reuse of waste plastic material, and other recyclable material for the development of both designs through to their construction.

Second, SPARK’s annual commitment to support charitable causes via pro-bono work.

PET 1 Polyethylene terephthalate commonly abbreviated (PET) is the most common thermoplastic polymer used for plastic containers primarily single use disposable bottle production.

1 million PET 1 plastic bottles are bought by consumers around the world every minute, 20,000 every second. 80% of these plastic bottles are NOT recycled, ending up in landfill or the ocean. Researchers suggest that by 2050 the weight of plastics in the ocean will outweigh the combined weight of all fish.

SPARK’s PET 1 doghouse is a reminder that we need to be more inventive how we deal with the plastic epidemic that our wasteful society faces.

The PET 1 doghouse is composed from recycled upcycled water bottles fixed to a bespoke printed plastic frame/ basket like armature. The screw thread bottle caps are used to fasten the clear plastic bottles to the frame via plastic gaskets and a rubber membrane that renders the doghouse watertight. The exposed bottle bases are finished with fluorescent plastic yellow discs.

The doghouse frame is fixed to a recycled WBP plywood base that is insulated and wrapped with the rubber membrane.
A washable cushion provides a comfortable mattress for the pooch.

SPARK’s “Reservoir Dogs” is a terrace of different sized and shaped doghouses in the round with a drinking pool at it centre. A paradigm for canine conviviality.

The terrace is composed of unique doghouses fabricated from recycled WBP plywood. When placed side by side they create an interesting assemblage appropriate for different breeds and sizes of dogs.
Perhaps suitable for the eponymous pet walker who has on a typical outing many animals in their charge?

SPARK’s “Reservoir Dogs” is a fun canine interpretation of the Quentin Tarantino’s Hollywood movie and the unusual cast list …Mr White, Mr Orange, Mr Pink, Mr Blue, all find their pied-à-terre at SPARK’s Reservoir Dogs.

“It was sad to see the doghouses leave for London as we have lived through their nascent design and construction stages in our studio right up to a local auntie adding the finishing “coach work” with bespoke yellow polka dot cushions” said Lim Wenhui.

“We had a lot of fun making the doghouse as did its first resident Buddy the Golden Retriever when he came to our studio for a visit to inspect the final product.

We hope that our efforts realize a few dollars for the extraordinary Blue Cross charity when the doghouses are put up for sale in April” added Wenhui.
