News: Gov’t Uged To Look Into Privatisation Of State Land In Federal Hill

Jul 10, 2018

The new government should investigate a large-scale project being undertaken at the foot of Federal Hill in Kuala Lumpur at a site formerly owned by the National Institute of Health (NIH), Bukit Bandaraya residents told Free Malaysia Today.

Heavy construction work is ongoing there with the approval of the previous government, but nearby communities have not been informed about the project, nor consulted, they claimed.

“We have yet to see any signboard being displayed on the nature of the works, but we suspect a major development is shaping up on the quiet,” said Bukit Bandaraya Residents Association adviser Mumtaz Ali.

For the sake of transparency and good governance, residents want to get information on what is happening to site from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Federal Territories and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“From our enquiries, we have learned that there has not been any public hearing called or held on the matter,” he noted, adding that they want to know if proper procedure was followed when the “institutional land” was privatized.

Previously, the site was jointly acquired by SP Setia and Mekar Gemilang via a land swap deal in 2012. In exchange for the site, the government obtained a 41.5-acre land in Setia Alam, where a health research facility complex, clinic and 24 apartments will be built by the aforementioned companies.

In March 2018, The Edge reported that SP Setia acquired the remaining 50 percent it doesn’t already own in the joint venture that owns the Federal Hill plot for RM431.89 million cash.

Separately, Mumtaz is seeking information on why plants are being cleared at Bukit Nanas at the city centre.

“Let us not wipe out whatever little green is left in Kuala Lumpur due to the poor planning of the former administration,” he added.
