News: Sime Darby Launches Communal Garden In Bukit Subang For Low-Income Families

Jul 12, 2018

Sime Darby Property joined forces with the residents of Melati Apartment in Bukit Subang, Shah Alam to launch a communal garden there on Sunday (8 July) in a bid maximise the use of available green spaces and help low-income families cope with the rising cost of living.

Dubbed as Melati Community Garden (Kebun Komuniti Melati), the urban farming project will provide needy families in the Bukit Subang township with facilities for growing edible crops for self-consumption and to generate additional income.

The unveiling was officiated by Kota Anggerik State Assemblyman YB Najwan Halimi, with several other important persons in attendance, including Department of National Constitution and National Integration (JPNIN Selangor) Director Pn. Fairojibanu Zainal Abidin, along with residents of Bukit Subang.

Sime Darby Property supported the initiative by setting up the garden’s infrastructure such as a fertigation system, whereby fertiliser and water are systematically distributed among plants via drip irrigation, making it easier to operate and manage than conventional farming.

“The Melati Community Garden is a pilot project that will benefit 30 selected families from the Melati Apartment in Bukit Subang,” said Sime Darby Property General Manager Appollo Leong.

“We are proud to be a part of this initiative, which will benefit the community with healthy and nutritious food, improved livelihood and a more harmonious living environment.”

The 1,248 sq m garden will be opened in three phases. Phase I, II, and III measures 444 sq m, 420 sq m and 384 sq m respectively.

So far, 30 people have registered to benefit from Phase I, with more community participation expected soon. These participants will also be provided with agricultural training so that they can effectively operate the farm.

Bukit Subang is a 250-acre township being developed by Sime Darby Property. Its sister townships comprise Denai Alam (1,000 acres), Elmina East (1,088 acres) and Elmina West (2,662 acres).

These are among the four townships in the City of Elmina, Malaysia’s first township focusing on wellness and liveability based on standards measured in Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey.
